Jean-Philippe COINTET (Associate Professor, Médialab – Sciences Po Paris)“The structure of the French media space and the challenge of yellow vests”
Abstract : I will start by outlining the results of an ongoing study we are working on at Médialab and which ambition is to describe the structure of the French media sphere. For doing so, we are collecting data at two distinct levels of the media system: on the one hand, the daily publication of articles by the 400 main news media, and on the other hand, the interactions that these articles generate (citations to media sources) on Twitter. The morphology of the media space that is emerging is characterized by a very high concentration of authority (particularly visible in the distribution of hypertext links) and a rather limited ideological polarization. This first result is in stark contrast with the structure of the media space as observed in the United States.
We will then consider how this order is being challenged in other public spaces of a more conversational nature. In particular, we will show how the reference to the media partially disrupts the media organization when captured through the content of public yellow vest groups on Facebook.
