Sander WAGNER (CREST) – “The Cost of Terror”.

Abstract: We look at discrimination against guests as well as hosts with typically Arab/Muslim names on the online rental market Airbnb. A field experiment with fake Airbnb accounts establishes that positive responses for Arab/Muslim guests requesting a stay are 16% lower than they are for those with French names. Analysis of Airbnb rental data of the Paris metro area from Nov. 2014 to March 2018 establishes that hosts with an Arab/Muslim name have 3% lower occupancy rates and 6% lower prices after controlling for extensive listing characteristics. We further show that the difference in occupancy rates emerges as a result of the Nov. 2015 terror attacks. Discrimination results in a loss of about 170$ per month for an average listing and losses are at least 70$ higher after the terror attacks.
