Sophie HATTE (ENS Lyon) – “Facebook and the Political Prospects of African Women

Abstract: Can social media promote female access to political positions? By providing a platform for direct communication between politicians and voters, social media may support the breakthrough of sidelined politicians. Strikingly, women are particularly underrepresented in politics, parliaments and public life. This paper focuses on the African context, where Facebook penetration has percolated over the past few years. We develop a novel methodology to measure time-varying Facebook use at local level. Preliminary evidence suggests that larger Facebook use is associated with higher vote shares for women candidates in parliamentary elections, and more favorable attitudes towards women leaders. Joint with Jordan Loper and Thomas Taylor.
